Glucose (Oral)

Oral glucose gel for treatment of hypoglycemia in conscious patients

Indications

Authorized

  • Known or suspected hypoglycemia in a conscious patient where there is no risk of aspiration or choking

Contraindications

None.

Adult Dosages

Authorized - known or suspected hypoglycemia

  • 1 of the following:
    • 15 g glucose PO (equivalent to one ~31 g tube or 32 ml pouch)
    • Glucose tablets: 4 tablets contain 16 g glucose
  • Repeat at 5 minutes as necessary; no limit

Pediatric Considerations

Authorized - known or suspected hypoglycemia

Pediatric

  • 1 of the following:
    • 15 g glucose PO (equivalent to one ~31 g tube or 32 ml pouch)
    • Glucose tablets: 4 tablets contain 16 g glucose
  • Repeat at 5 minutes as necessary; no limit

Neonates

  • Draw up 0.6 g (1.5 mL) of glucose gel and apply buccally

None.

Additional Information

Mechanism of Action

Increase of blood glucose levels via buccal absorption when administered orally.

Warnings and Precautions

In presentations of altered consciousness: risk of choking or aspiration. In such situations, glucose gel may be administered by saturating gauze swab with gel and positioning between patient's lip and gum to promote absorption.
